Lebanese Government Offers Scholarship To Top
Students In GIJ.
Seven
students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) have been
offered internal scholarship by the Lebanese government.
The scholarship, which was first of its kind at the
university sought to empower first year student of the University who have
distinguished themselves among their co-equals.
The scholarship covers tuition fees, books, accommodation
and other academic materials.
The beneficiaries include, Mr Richard Dzikunu
Mawutor, Mr Sheriff Appiah, Miss Emma Obiri, Mr Manasseh Sugartan Anor, Miss Eugenia
Aforfa Kumi, Miss Leonora Amakuor Akpey and Jeffery Owuraku
The Lebanese government as part of its gratitude to
Ghana and its people who received the Lebanese migrant 150 years ago, which
included a group of Lebanese businessmen
and women have mandated the embassy to create a welfare fund to finance social
and educational activities in Ghana.
The Ambassador of Lebanon, Mr Ali H. Halabi said the
fund was totally financed by the businessmen and women. The fund, he said will
focus on education.
He revealed that 30 scholarships will be granted to
Ghanaian students in the main Public Universities. 7 full scholarships with accommodation
fees have been offered to top students at University of Ghana faculty of law
and 8 other law students at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology
(KNUST).
He congratulated the students and entreated them to
learn hard to excel in their area of study. However, cautioned them that if any
leave below his or her limit, the scholarship will be revoked.
The Rector of the University, Mr David newton said
the choice of Journalism is no means by accident hence the beneficiaries should
abide by the professional ethics and standard. He added “do not allow anybody
to manipulate you”.
He expressed his gratitude to the Lebanese government
for showing such a humane gesture to the student body.
Mr Richard Dzikunu Mawutor, speaking on behalf of
the beneficiaries promised to make very good use of the opportunity.
“We promise to make very good use of this
opportunity offered us and continue to strive harder for a better academic
excellence which would be geared towards building a better future for this
country” he said.
He again expressed his gratitude to the school and
the Lebanese government for such a wonderful partnership and hoped it will
continue to support brilliant students to harness their potential.
