As part of government’s plan to reduce housing deficit by 2016, the President, John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for the commencement of 5,000 affordable housing units for low and middle income earners across the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President indicated that government expects a significant number of the houses to be completed and delivered by Construtora OAS, a Brazilian construction firm, before end of 2016.

This construct adds to several partnerships between the two countries with the latest being a 74 million euros Brazilian government loan to fund a three-tier interchange at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

According to the president, government was finalising a deal with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), to take over the funding and completion of the 5,000 abandoned housing units in Accra, Kumasi, Wa and Tamale.

He disclosed that negotiation between Brazilian governments is far advanced hence government will possibly gain 1 billion dollar master facility agreement to finance projects in the energy, transport and water sectors.

‘’I also wish to announce that we and the Brazilian government are in talks to facilitate a one billion dollar master facility agreement to finance various infrastructure project here in Ghana; this will cover the energy sector, water, transport, agriculture and so many other things that the government is committed in investing in.’’
